Drupalcon DC--Are You Still Looking for a Place To Stay?
In both Barcelona and Boston many of us at pingVision rented a flat that we shared rather than stayed in hotels.
In my last job with the Western States Arts Federation, I was traveling close to 50% of the time and ended up working with agencies in some 36 States in the US and 2 Provinces in Canada giving hundreds of presentations and sleeping in many hotels. I'm not keen on hotel staff coming into my room--I simply don't feel comfortable in the space. Typically you pay extra, A LOT extra, for Internet access. You end up eating at restaurants, which while nice is expensive. Having a flat means you can eat at least some meals at grocery store prices. Staying in an apartment means you have more space to spread out--helpful if you are going to, temporarily, extend your office to another city.
Drupalcon DC is no exception. Six of us will be sharing an apartment about a mile away from the convention center. We'll have roughly 3000 square feet of living space with 3.5 bathrooms, two fireplaces, and a deck plus free wireless Internet. This will end up costing, the equivalent, of $55/per person per night in a historic part of the city.
I have found that using sites like Expedia and Travelocity almost never help me find the kinds of properties that I prefer to rent.
So, are you looking for a place to stay for Drupalcon? Do you mind sharing a space with other folks provided you aren't falling over each other? I found the place we're staying at using Vacation Rentals By Owner. The web site is ugly, but there are some pretty amazing deals to be had.
Hopefully this tip helps somebody make their way to the Convention. I'm looking forward to seeing everybody in eight weeks or so!
