Firehouse.com Launches in Drupal!
This past year I was fortunate to have worked on the Firehouse.com - a property of Cygnus Business Media - website as Web Producer for pingVision.
Firehouse represents a community of firefighting volunteers and professionals. This group of men and women enjoy sharing their "digs", equipment, and experiences. The site needed to reflect and appeal to this community.
Cygnus Business Media brought wireframes, a few comps, and excellent requirements documents.
My role on this project was to:
- To interpret existing requirement documents and wireframes and give them context within Drupal
- Draft use cases that matched the functionality described but could be developed in Drupal
- Act as scrum master with the team and the client, a process that worked great for both the external and internal teams
- Develop information architecture in conjunction with our themers and designers
- Manage Quality Assurance
The magazine's online presence allows subscribers to the publication to access premium content. Users can also purchase shorter periods of access directly on system without ordering the magazine itself.
Community members (firefighters) can upload galleries of firehouse amenities and equipment.
The site includes webcasts, cartoons, podcasts, forums, blogs, job listings, photostories, news, and video.
The forums are a vBulletin integration with single signon between the forum and Drupal.
The site is still being tweaked in terms of performance tuning - thus the "Firehouse site launch process in progress" block. I'm excited for that last piece of the process to be completed!
I want to congratulate all of the Firehouse team on the recent soft launch! I thoroughly enjoyed working with all of you.

I like that site, looks profesional for me. I moved from Joomla to Drupal as well.
Dude, that is one slow and ugly site.
It is taking over fifteen seconds to render. YSlow gives it an E. Page Speed throws some red flags as well.
See if you can find a graphic designer that can help revamp your CSS template, it is so 90's retro.
The site will speed up as the performance tuning is complete.
The graphic design was brought to the table by the client.
Added a few thoughts of my own on my own site here
This is like a little slice of heaven as a volunteer firefighter who makes most of his living with Drupal. Awesome write up!
Thanks for your comment. It was a incredibly fun project to work on. The teams, both at pingVision and at Cygnus Business Media, were a joy to work with.
